Two new colour breaks from the very popular and reliable salvia species commonly used in low water, low maintenance landscaping.
Traditionally a royal purple we now have the choice of the crisp white flowers of S. 'White Velour' or a deep mid pink colour of S. 'Pink Velour'. Individual flowers are delightfully felted in texture making them particularly interesting to children. Like most salvias (or sages as commonly known) the foliage is aromatic and forms a clump. Suckers form from base each new growing season slowly increasing clump size. Flowers mainly in spring and autumn. Ideal for windy coastal zones as well as inner city areas where it tolerates pollution levels better than most plants.
WATER REQUIREMENTS: Low. Once established, quite dry tolerant requiring only occasional long soak during extended periods of heat and at peak flowering times.
CARE: Low maintenance and easy to grow. Happy in most soil types given they are well draining but will perform best in enriched soils. Choose a full sun location although tolerant of light shade. Apply a slow release fertiliser in spring.
Remove spent flower stems not only for more tidy appearance but to encourage further flushes more quickly. A harder prune may be given in early spring to encourage a denser habit and neater shape.
