Campanulas take both their common name Bellflower and their scientific name Campanula – Latin for little bell – from their characteristic bell-shaped flowers. Growth sizes and habit range from upright clumping species to dainty, ground hugging or trailing varieties meaning a varied display can be created using different plants whilst establishing a continuity to colour and forms through a mixed border. Some varieties will make a bold statement with large pendulous blooms whilst many ground covering species will be smothered in colour during peak display and are brilliant for filling in spaces between rocks or cascading over walls.

Another great benefit from this versatile group is that they will perform well in lightly shaded areas so are perfect for areas where dappled shade is created by overhanging trees or branches as well as filling containers that may be placed within covered entertainment areas. It won’t be hard to find a use and space for these cheery and undemanding plants.
